2013 Year in Review
Rick Barton Ministries
January: On January 1, Rick Barton had the privilege of leading 100 ski instructors and staff in a New Year's prayer before the start of the annual torchlight parade down Crested Butte Mountain. Rich and Shelba Townsend spent a week helping two of our "alumni" missionaries in Mexico. They also conducted Thursday night studies with ranchers 30 miles away. Rick and Rich taught the West Elk Bible Institute "Introduction to Christian Apologetics" as well as conducted Saturday Evening Worship services. In addition, the Bartons and Townsends held 4 weeks of Bible studies in Crested Butte South, a town of 1000+ with no evangelical church, which sadly received no local participants. Our Intern, Paul Muirhead, was released to take on the role of Children's Ministry Director for his local church. Shelba T teaches a young women's study each week.
February: Rick B conducted another funeral with 200 hearing the gospel. (Ultimately Rick conducted over a dozen funerals sharing the gospel with over 1000 mostly unsaved attendees!) We held a dinner for all the evangelical pastors and their wives in the Gunnison Valley with 21 in attendance to meet, pray and fellowship with each other. Rick taught fire safety classes for the Crested Butte and Gunnison Fire Departments and handed out firefighter New Testaments and Devotionals. Rick continued to teach skiing while he and Rich continued the Bible Institute, Thursday evening, and Saturday Evening ministries. At the end of February, Rick B led the worship at the High Ground men's Bible/ski retreat at Beaver Creek, CO.
March: Rick and Melva travelled to Livermore, CO where they held revival services. They also met with "alumni" and supporters in Ft. Collins, CO.
April: Rick had another successful knee surgery. Then we met with supporters from the Denver, Colorado Springs area. Rich and Shelba joined us and we held a "vision retreat" where we renewed the focus of our ministry on "win one-train one-send one" for the days ahead.
May: Rick and Melva travelled to Waynesville, MO to hold services. Then it was off to Guthrie, OK where they met with supporters and held a revival and dodged devastating tornados by an hour! Then Rick attended a fire conference where he hiked up to the Storm King Fire disaster site with survivors. In the meantime, Rich and Shelba conducted all the services back in Colorado.
June: Rich and Shelba spent two weeks ministering in MO and TX as well as preaching in churches locally. Rick served on a fire in Western Colorado where he was able to pray with firefighters and give away New Testaments. In the middle of the assignment he and Melva flew back to TN and MS to help with funeral services for a dear friend and Board member.
July: Rick returned to the fire and then headed to Louisville, KY to work on his Doctor of Ministries and preach. Following that we held our annual cowboy church service at the local rodeo.
August: Rick was called to a forest fire in Idaho for two weeks where he held two chapel services after shift and gave away New Testaments and devotionals. Rich, Shelba and Melva continued the local ministries.
September: Rick was called to the massive flooding on Colorado's front-range north of Denver. While there he was able to hand out more New Testaments and devotionals to the rescuers. We started up a new class for the West Elk Bible Institute, "Introduction to Church History".
October: This was a month of trials as Rich T's sister passed away in the midst of Rich and Shelba leading a mission trip to Mexico; Shelba T developed a devastating pneumonia and was rushed to several hospitals over several weeks; Rick and Melva conducted a chapel for their family reunion and Rick passed out afterward, Melva had a flare-up of Sciatica preventing her working for two months, and Rick's mom continued to grow weaker. The Lord was gracious however and showed Himself to be strong in our weaknesses. We held a gospel music night at a local church and prepared to host families for the Billy Graham "My Hope" campaign.
November: We hosted home groups for the My Hope campaign, attended ski school meetings, and visited Rick's mom in the hospital daily as well as a host of other folks who were suffering. Rich T preached a sermon series at Trinity Baptist in Gunnison which was very well received.
December: Rick B preached 14 services in December at Trinity Baptist (Saturday evenings, Sunday mornings (2x a morning), a "Hanging of the Greens" and a Christmas Eve service). He and Rich are helping supply the pulpit while Trinity is conducting a pastoral search. The Lord seemed to bless those in attendance. The Crested Butte News ran a feature article on Rick B which opened several doors to share. Shelba T is doing better while waiting for further treatment at National Jewish Hospital in Denver.
Thank You for your faithful prayers and support!
