Wow! What a wonderful weekend! On Thursday I had the privilege of praying with a fellow firefighter to receive Jesus as Savior and Lord; on Saturday afternoon we baptized him, on Saturday night we had almost a full house for our Saturday Evening Worship service; Sunday morning we drove 65 miles to hold two services in Lake City, CO; in the afternoon we celebrated one of our ministry members new role as a Colorado State Patrolman and then drove 40 miles up the Cochetopa Pass to join a group of ranchers from Rich and Shelba's Bible study group for a potluck! Our God is soooo good! His grace along with your prayers and support keep us going!
May Happenings: As Melva and I finished our ministry swing through OK and TX, we were able to return to fruitful times of ministry here. Melva resumed her substitute teaching and I taught forest fire classes for the Forest Service as well as Gunnison County. During each of these sessions I put out firefighter New Testaments, Fire/EMS devotionals and my new firefighter's 23 Psalm posters.
In mid-May Melva and I travelled to St. Louis where we had the privilege of singing and participating in our associate Rich Townsend's ordination service at South County Baptist. What a joy to see the lives Rich and Shelba have touched through their years of service there.
After returning from St. Louis I prepared to share God's word over Memorial Day weekend at the Pitkin Community Church. The night before the service I was called and asked if I were available to go on one of our many forest fires in Colorado. I told them I had commitments to preach that night in Gunnison and the next morning in Pitkin. After a few minutes they called back and asked me to come as soon as I finished preaching in Pitkin, which I did! On the fire I worked 90 hours in 6 days, saw two bears and was able to give away a firefighter Bible and share with several firefighters.
Here's a little more about our firefighter friend. Upon returning to Gunnison, I visited our fire chief whose wife is suffering from cancer. During several visits I was able to explain about being born-again and becoming a 24/7 disciple of Jesus. When I asked Jim if he wanted more time to think about it, he replied "No, I want to make that commitment!" Two days later we were blessed to baptize him in the Gunnison River with his wife, family and friends looking on. Please pray for Jim and his lovely wife Becky.
On June 10th we shared two services in Lake City, CO at Grace Fellowship, a wonderful church which grew out of a Bible study we held in the 70's. Over 140 folks attended the two services in a town of 300 permanent residents. Lyn and the folks there are doing an awesome job!
Family: Great News! In September we have back-to-back weddings! Our daughter Rebekah and fiancée Nick are getting married in Vail, CO on September 16th. Our oldest son Steve and fiancée Annie are getting married in Los Angeles 6 days later on the 22nd. The dates were arranged so that Stephen, Joy, Hannah and Bethan will only have to make one trip from Scotland. Please pray for the Lord's hand to be on both couples. On June 6th Melva and I celebrated our 41st wedding anniversary (in jail-visiting a friend) and on May 14th I celebrated my 39th birthday…..go figure! I consider myself the most fortunate man in the world to be married to Melva for 41 years!
Upcoming: This week I teach several days of forest fire classes and then we dash back to Guthrie, OK to hold services at Harmony Church (June 17-20). This will be our first time sharing with these folks. Please pray for the Holy Spirit to move in a mighty way. From Guthrie we head to Waynesville, MO (June 24) where we'll share with our friends at Faith Baptist. Upon returning, it looks like I'll be available for more forest fire assignments. In mid-July we conduct our annual Rodeo church service here in Gunnison. We depend on your prayers each day as we seek to share God's word in the power of His Holy Spirit!
Doctorate: Good News! The editor working on the first third of my writing has overcome some personal issues and is now back at work preparing the paper for submission. Please pray I can finish things this year!
Finances: "And my God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus!" Philippians 4:19. After some rough waters this winter and spring it seems the Lord is stabilizing our financial ship. A huge "Thank You" to all of you who have stepped up and invested in the Lord's work through us! We know He will provide in all the areas He leads us, and we praise Him. We also realize He works through each of you as you pray and invest financially.
Rich and Shelba, Paul and Sarah are all doing well and faithfully serving in each of our ministries.
Thank you for your prayers and support! We pray the Lord Jesus will richly bless you and each of yours.
