Answers to prayer and new opportunities! Thank you for your consistent prayers and support! We’ve seen wonderful answers to prayer and new doors opening almost every week. Missionary Cathy Gallaher continues to recover from cancer, our ailing Explorer’s transmission has gotten stronger, and many other prayers have been answered. Our “Called to Ministry” breakfast continues to grow with men and women returning from summers of service around the world. What a blessing to see their faces and hear how the Lord Jesus has changed them and so many through them.
In August I was privileged to preach and teach at Trinity Baptist in Gunnison, First Baptist Church in Salida, CO, led music for the Community Church’s men’s retreat, and of course our Saturday evening and Thursday morning meetings. Melva finished helping lead a women’s Bible study and continues to go door to door with our friend Shelba sharing her testimony. Your prayers undergird us as we minister, thank you!
Coming up: September 4-5 we travel to Gallatin, TN. September 14th we start our new semester of training students in the West Elk Bible Institute. Our goal is to equip men and women for more effective service in the kingdom of God. September 15, Melva leaves for four weeks to visit our daughter Joy in Scotland and await the arrival of our newest grandchild. September 29, Lord willing, I join her for two weeks. While in Scotland, we share at two churches and possibly a theological college. What a blessing! October 17 we hold a worship service for hunters near Gunnison. October 24-27 we hold meetings at Faith Baptist in Waynesville, MO, and October 31 we share at South County Baptist in St. Louis, MO. Otherwise, it’s just sitting around ? working on my DMin and holding services locally till ski season.
Family: Stephen, Joy and Hannah are anxiously awaiting the arrival of their new one. (I recommended the name, “Ricky Spurgeon Barton” if it’s a boy. However, the response so far has been poor at best.) Bek is gaining experience as the assistant manager in a new restaurant in Vail. Steve had his first paid job as a production assistant in Hollywood! Tim and Sarah continue to work and worship in Los Angeles. Melva has started substitute teaching, and even with our crazy schedule, they are filling her “home” time.
Finances: We want to give a huge “Thank You” to each of you who have continued to invest in this ministry through the summer and the tough economic times! We have not gone lacking and every bill has been paid. Yes, the ministry finances remain tight, but the Lord has allowed us to continue purchasing resources for our students, underwrite the ministry breakfasts, and even help other workers such as Joe and Angela Ricks who are filling vital roles on the campus and fire department ministries.
Joe and Angela are graduates of Western State who direct the Christian Challenge college ministry. Joe also serves as the volunteer chaplain for the college football team and local fire department. Each month Rick Barton Ministries invests in Joe and Angela’s work. The following is a short note from them to each of you! We encourage you to pray for and support Joe and Angela.
Dear friends and co-laborers of Rick Barton Ministries,
My name is Joe Ricks. My wife, Angela and I are directors of Christian Challenge at Western State College in Gunnison. We would like to thank you for your financial support of this ministry.
Because of your support, we are able to minister to students through weekly meetings, Bible studies, one-on-one discipleship times and just fun (fishing, hunting, baking, etc.). The heart of our ministry is the discipleship times. We truly believe that it is through these times that lives are changed. Students learn how to walk with the Lord, share their faith and teach others to do the same. Last semester we had about 25 students in one-on-one discipleship!!!
Again, thanks for helping us reach the lost at Western. Together we are doing something that we could not do alone! Joe and Angela Ricks
Recently we were able to help Angela go visit Pioneers missionary Cathy Gallaher while she recovers at her parent’s home in VA. They were college roommates and had a joyous time! This weekend we were able to help Joe travel with the football team to Montana to hold chapel services.
Please note: Due to our busy speaking schedule in September and October, receipts will be delayed!
Prayer requests: Please pray for the Holy Spirit’s anointing as we enter these new and old fields of harvest! Please pray for our daughter Bek to come fully to Jesus. She is a wonderful daughter in so many ways. We long to see her know Him in His fullness. Please pray for our other children and their families. Please pray for all the services coming up. Please pray for Cathy Gallaher’s full recovery, for Missionary Dan Curtis’s healing from cancer, for friends Bill Schram and Bob Moffat’s healing, for a wonderful servant of Jesus, Minnie Rose, that her eyes may be healed. Please pray for the West Elk Bible Institute, that we can provide quality, practical, biblical teaching. We know that many of you are truly prayer warriors and count on your prayers daily!
Rich and Shelba Townsend: Several of you have rejoiced with us that the Lord has brought Rich and Shelba into our lives to help with the ministry. Rich and Shelba are here from St. Louis working as volunteers with the local Southern Baptist Church. They share our vision in so many ways and have devoted their off time to assist us in teaching and organizing. We would appreciate your prayers for these gifts from God who free us up to expand our ministry.
Fire/EMS devotional update: As of September 1, the books are being printed and we should see them in the next few weeks. Response to a special pre-printing went extremely well at a national fire exposition. Please pray that the Lord will use this tool, including the stories I wrote, to touch many lives.
Thank you again! It means sooooo much to know that you are praying for us each day and investing in the work God has given us. May the Lord Jesus richly bless each of you and your families!
In His grace and to His glory
