Joys in June!
Wow! May finished with a bang! In the past week we’ve experienced forest fires, falling asleep in the dentist’s chair, and a giving miracle. So here goes!
Shortly after we returned from our 5 week speaking tour we jumped right back into training workers for ministry, visiting and encouraging brothers and sisters, working on my DMin project, teaching a fire class and performing a wedding.
Then, we had a giving miracle. As Melva and I got up last Sunday, we were praying about our giving. When we added up all the needs of students going out on mission trips and other opportunities, we realized that it would take a significant increase in our offering. Yet, after prayer, we decided to do so. Within five minutes the phone rang and fire dispatch asked me to go to a fire near Norwood CO. The amazing thing was, I hadn’t made myself available yet. By the end of the week I had worked 79 hours in five and a half days and earned enough to meet the needs and even extra for some dental work. (Speaking of the dental work, I arrived home in time to go directly to the dentist. While he was drilling away, I fell asleep……)
The greatest thing about the fire assignment was the opportunity I had to share with firefighters from all over the country. Some had read my articles in the Fellowship of Christian Firefighters (FCF) magazine, while others saw my FCF shirt and asked for a firefighter Bible or prayer! What a huge blessing. Your prayers and support allow me to do this.
Return on Investments! This week we heard reports from several more folks whom we have encouraged in ministry. Paul, who is currently running a Christian coffee-house is preparing to go on a missions trip to India in the fall. Mark, a local businessman taught our Saturday night service for the first time, and he and Karen are praying about more mission work in Mexico. Cisco and Naomi are helping lead a team of fifty from their San Diego church to Haiti. Ruthie is headed to inner-city New York to work with women in the Salvation Army Shelter. Your investments of prayer and support are bearing phenomenal returns. Thank You!
Family: Stephen, Joy, Hannah and baby on-the-way, are sharing with local churches and trusting the Lord for the right ministry for Stephen to serve. We’re praying and trusting that by next month’s newsletter we will have good news to report. Bek returned safely from Indonesia and we trust the Lord is working in her heart. Steve has a few leads in TV production and would appreciate your prayers for the right opening. Tim and Sara are doing well in Los Angeles and would ask for continued prayer for Sara’s father, Ken, who is suffering from kidney disease. Melva finished the school year substituting almost every day after we returned. Now she is focusing on ministry and family needs. I bruised some ribs on the fire but the Lord is healing me up pretty quickly. June 6, Melva and I celebrate our 39th wedding anniversary. I am sooooo thankful for my godly wife!
Finances: Summer is a difficult time for many ministries, and with the long road trip the costs add up. We are very thankful for each of you who undergird us with your prayers and support. We are trusting the Lord to fulfill the promise of His word, He will supply all of our needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus (Phil. 4:19). Thank you for your patience on our receipts being late last month due to the ministry road trip.
Upcoming events and prayer requests: This morning we shared in Pitkin CO. Next week I teach a fire class, work with our folks who feel called to ministry, and conduct our weekly Saturday evening service. Please pray that the Lord will continue to open the right doors for us to share Jesus; on forest fires, in town, at our July rodeo service, and wherever else He sends us. Thank you for praying for Stephen’s calling to the right ministry, Bek to fall in love with Jesus, Steve’s job in his field, and Tim and Sara. Please lift up Cathy Gallaher, Dan Curtis, Bob Moffat and Ken Fox for healing. Please pray for all those who have gone out this summer around the world to share the Savior. We know your prayers support each of us.
Integrity in newsletters: Breaking News! The church we shared with last month in Louisville has really caught fire! They had a recent experience which brought a number of unbelievers to them, received an unexpected $100,000 check, and are actively pursuing a building program. Wow, makes you want us to come and share with your church doesn’t it? Well, all the above is true; one of the church buildings caught on fire, the fire department responded, the insurance check will be around $100,000 and they are going to rebuild.
Pastor Scott from Lakewood Baptist and I laughed that the above would go well in our newsletter. It’s very tempting to try to overinflate what the Lord is doing through your ministry in order to impress your supporters and encourage more giving. The truth is, we need to tell the truth. With the Lord’s help we will continue to do so. And I do pray that Holy Spirit fire will fall everywhere we go. We know that we’re just tools in the Father’s hand.
In His grace and to His glory, Rick and Melva
