July Highlights: Forest fires, preaching and rodeo! July was another blessed month of ministry. This time we had the privilege of sharing in Cripple Creek, CO, at a rodeo church service in Gunnison, as well as for a young church in Sargents, CO. In between, I had two forest fire assignments, one in CO and one in Utah.
As we prepared for Cripple Creek, Melva felt led to pray for an abundant harvest of souls. We were sharing in a wonderful church we’ve ministered in for over 25 years and I wasn’t sure what the response would be. When I gave the invitation six adults came forward! And, the pastor said several others indicated decisions as well!
The next weekend we were home in Gunnison and held our annual rodeo church service. The following day I was dispatched to a fire near Durango, CO where I spent 5 days. During that time I gave away a number of firefighter New Testaments and got to meet an inmate firefighter who had written me about becoming an evangelist/ firefighter. Upon returning to Gunnison we held services in a great new church in Sargents, CO, 35 miles from our home.
After that, it was off to Utah for another fire. What a blessing as I gave away New Testaments, held a 5:30 am chapel service, and shared the plan of salvation with several firefighters.
I had a couple of days at home and one morning I headed into town to have a cup of coffee and read my Bible. As I passed McDonalds I saw an out-of-town wildland fire engine and felt led to stop. After some internal debate I turned around and went in. It turns out I knew two of the three crewmembers. I had on a Fellowship of Christian Firefighters t-shirt and the third firefighter asked about it. A few moments later he caught me alone and shared a great story. He was a Christian and had prayed the night before about how to share Jesus on fires. He wondered if there was anyone out there already doing it. When we met the next morning he realized that God had answered his prayer!
Family: The Lord continues to bless each of us. Joy is serving through her church on an Ireland outreach. Rebekah is doing well in Vail and starting a t-shirt design company, Steve is working at the Community Church in Gunnison, and Tim is headed back for his final (?) semester at BIOLA University. Melva and I are in good health and enjoying our 35 years of marriage. On September 1 our family will be featured in an art gallery in Gunnison. We will be showing some of our photos.
Upcoming: August 11th I share at a men’s dinner in Gunnison, the 12th I meet with the Western State Football team, and then back to fire duty. The 22nd is our first FCA meeting and then things really get going with the college ministry. I’ll be coordinating the college football team chapels as well. Please pray for these opportunities!
Mark your calendars: November 4th will be our dinner for friends of the ministry in Colorado Springs, November 5 we speak at Black Forest Chapel in Colorado Springs, November 7th will be our dinner in Dallas, November 10 will be our dinner in Oklahoma City. Please plan to come to the dinner closest to you. We’d love to see and fellowship with you! Call for times and location.
Finances: Once again the Lord has provided! Your prayers and faithful support continue to under gird us. It looks as if we’ll be even going into the fall.
Prayer requests: Our dear friend and board member, Imogene Boyd, went to be with the Lord recently. Please pray for Chub and their family. Please pray for the anointing of the Holy Spirit as we share around the country. Please pray for our college ministry this year. Please pray for the students who are still out in ministry around the world. Please pray for our son’s Steve’s heart pacemaker and problems with health insurance as a result, and please pray for my knee to be healed.
Thank You! You are loved and appreciated.
In His grace,
Rick and Melva
